             abstract = "A conceptual framework for modelling environment data, which 
                         caters for a diversity data sources and formats, it first 
                         described. Then, the data model adopted in the design of an 
                         object-oriented image processing and geographical information 
                         system, called SPRING, and its associated spatial database 
                         management system, called EnvDATA, is introduced. The frawork may 
                         in fact be viewed as an abstraction of the basic characteristics 
                         of the data model. Finally, a specific environmental database 
                         storing facts about the Brazilian Amazonia, implomented using the 
                         SPRING system, is briefly outlined.",
